Collection: Denmark Banknotes

On current Danish banknotes, every bridge in the country literally has three thousand years of history behind it: the obverse shows a real bridge and the reverse, an archaeological object from the Bronze Age found near it.

Bridges on the front, prehistory on the back

The 50-krone note features the Sallingsund Bridge and a vessel from Skarpsalling; the 200, Copenhagen's Knippelsbro and a fibula from Langstrup; the 1000, the highest, the Great Belt Bridge and the famous Trundholm sun chariot.

A krone born from a union

The Danish krone was introduced in 1873 as part of the Scandinavian Monetary Union, together with Sweden and Norway. The union broke up in 1914, but the name and value of the krone survived: Denmark negotiated to keep it out of the euro when signing the Maastricht Treaty.
