The tugrik was born on December 9, 1925, alongside the Soviet ruble, and its name simply means "round," in reference to the shape of traditional coins. Mongolia made it the country's sole currency in 1928.

Sükhbaatar and Genghis Khan, face to face

In the current series, banknotes from 5 to 100 tugriks bear the portrait of revolutionary commander Damdiny Sükhbaatar, while higher denominations feature Genghis Khan, founder of the Mongol Empire.

A pioneer in security banknotes

The 2016 20,000 tugrik commemorative note, issued for the 800th anniversary of the Mongol State, was the first banknote in the world to incorporate LOOK (Laser Originated Optical Key) security technology.
