Exchanging cash currency is illegal in Turkmenistan, so alongside the official exchange rate—about 3.5 manats to the dollar—there is a parallel market where the same dollar can cost more than ten times as much.

An extra zero, erased overnight

The manat replaced the Soviet ruble in 1993. After years of sharp devaluation, on January 1, 2009, the country launched a new manat that was worth 5,000 times the previous one, overnight.

From Niyazov to national heroes

Banknotes before the reform only featured the portrait of former president Saparmurat Niyazov; after 2009, his image was reserved for the 500-manat note, and the rest of the denominations began to feature busts of other great Turkmen figures.
