The Bahraini dinar is, after the Kuwaiti dinar, the most highly valued currency in the world: a single half-dinar note is worth more than many standard banknotes from other countries. It was created in 1965 to replace the Gulf rupee, the currency shared by several Persian Gulf emirates before each minted its own.

A fraudulent order from Argentina

In 1993, an Argentine security printing company agreed to print millions of 20-dinar notes based on an order without actual authorization from the central bank. When massive deposits of these notes appeared, the Bahrain Monetary Agency withdrew them all and replaced them with a version featuring a new security hologram.

Heritage in your pocket

The 2008 series features historic buildings such as the Shaikh Isa House and the old Bahrain Court, alongside a portrait of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the Al Fateh Mosque, the largest in the country.
