Guatemala 5 Quetzales P122A 2023 UNC

5 quetzal banknote issued by the Bank of Guatemala with an approval date of March 15, 2023, uncirculated (UNC) and cataloged as Pick 122A. It is the paper version of the denomination, which replaced the polymer one (Pick 122) starting in 2014.

Obverse: portrait of General Justo Rufino Barrios, President of the Republic between 1873 and 1885, over a stepped pyramid, with a quetzal in flight, the Guatemalan flag, and a Mayan mask. Reverse: a teacher with her students in a classroom, before a blackboard, an allegory of the primary education that Barrios established, accompanied by Mayan glyphs and figures.

Justo Rufino Barrios was the great figure of the Guatemalan Liberal Reform and one of the proponents of Central American union, a cause for which he died in combat in 1885. The banknote brings together the three fixed elements of the current series: the quetzal, the national bird that gives the currency its name, the national hero over the pyramid, and Mayan iconography. An affordable piece to start or complete the Guatemala series.
