£5 banknote issued by The Royal Bank of Scotland plc dated 11 February 2016, printed on polymer, uncirculated (UNC) and catalogued as Pick 370. It was the bank's first polymer banknote.

Obverse: a portrait of the writer Nan Shepherd (1893-1981) wearing her characteristic headband, set against a mountain landscape, accompanied by two quotes from her work, including "It’s a grand thing to get leave to live," and the bank's emblem in a transparent window. Reverse: two intertwined mackerel and handwritten Gaelic verses with the signature of poet Sorley MacLean.

Nan Shepherd is the author of "The Living Mountain," one of the great books about the Scottish mountains, and the banknote combines her portrait with Scotland's nature and literature: the mackerel recalls the importance of fishing off its coasts and MacLean's verses, the Gaelic poetic tradition. A modern banknote with a very refined design, essential for any collection of polymer or Scottish banknotes.
