Obverse: the portrait of Dr. Mariano Gálvez, hero of independence and Head of State of Guatemala in the Central American Federation, over a stepped pyramid, with a quetzal in flight, a Mayan figure, the flag of Guatemala, and a quill pen over a color-shifting patch. Reverse: the signing of the Central American Independence Act, with the heroes gathered around the table.

Mariano Gálvez governed the State of Guatemala in the 1830s and is remembered for his reforms in education and justice. The reverse reproduces the foundational moment of September 15, 1821, the most recognizable historical scene in Guatemalan numismatics, making this 20 quetzales a centerpiece of the ongoing series.
