1 lev banknote issued by the Bulgarian National Bank dated 1999, uncirculated (UNC) and cataloged as Pick 114a. It is the lowest denomination of the series created with the 1999 monetary reform.

Obverse: the icon of Saint John of Rila (Sv. Ivan Rilski, 876-946), with a halo, long white beard, and staff, next to an ornamental grille and text in an ancient script. Reverse: Rila Monastery, with its main church featuring domes and red and white stripes, and multi-story arcaded galleries, accompanied by a plan of the grounds.

Saint John of Rila is the patron saint of Bulgaria and the founder of the monastery that bears his name, the most important in the country and a World Heritage site. The 1 lev banknote circulated for a short time, as it was soon replaced by the coin of the same value, and today it is history: Bulgaria adopted the euro in 2026 and the lev ceased to be issued.
