The New 2,000 Guaraníes Banknote of Paraguay 2026 (Indigenous Peoples and the Jaguar of the Humid Chaco). Iberoamericana Banknotes
Share
The Central Bank of Paraguay presented the new full family of the country’s banknotes on October 5, 2026—the day of the guaraní's 83rd anniversary—and the 2,000 guaraníes banknote is, in many ways, the most groundbreaking of the six. It is the smallest denomination in the series, the shortest in format, and the only one whose obverse is not dedicated to historical figures identified by name, but to the indigenous peoples of Paraguay. A banknote for daily circulation transformed into a tribute to those who gave their language to the country and their name to its currency.
This banknote has not yet entered circulation: what was presented are the designs, and the printing contract has yet to be awarded. Therefore, it is not possible to buy it today, but you can reserve it: write to us via email or WhatsApp and we will add you to our reservation list to notify you and set one aside for you as soon as the BCP puts it into circulation and we can obtain it in uncirculated condition.
Why Paraguay is renewing its 2,000 guaraníes banknote
The new family is the first comprehensive redesign of the guaraní in over sixty years. The project officially began in 2023, when the BCP awarded the French firm Oberthur Fiduciaire the design and origination of the series, and it was developed over three years with the advice of historians and biologists. The directive, according to the Central Bank's treasury, was that every element on the banknote must be justified.
Following this logic, the 2,000 guaraníes occupies the first step of a chronological narrative that runs through the entire family: it begins with the indigenous peoples, continues with the missions on the 5,000, the founding of the State on the 10,000, the defense of sovereignty on the 20,000, education on the 50,000, and the arts on the 100,000. Read in order, the series is a history of Paraguay told in six banknotes.
The honorees: the indigenous peoples
Unlike the rest of the family, the obverse of the 2,000 does not portray two specific historical characters, but an indigenous man and woman, depicted with their traditional headdresses and ornaments. It is a collective tribute to the indigenous peoples of Paraguay, and it carries a symbolic weight that is hard to overstate in a country where Guaraní is an official language alongside Spanish—a nearly unique case in the Americas—and where the currency itself bears the name of the people who inhabited the land before the European arrival.
It is not a minor detail that this tribute falls precisely on the lowest-value banknote, the one that circulates the most and passes through the most hands each day.
Design of the 2,000 guaraníes banknote
Obverse (dominant violet / lilac color):
- Portraits of an indigenous man and woman from the indigenous peoples of Paraguay, with traditional headdresses and ornaments.
- Legend BANCO CENTRAL DEL PARAGUAY at the top.
- Value expressed as 2MIL in large numerals and DOS MIL GUARANÍES in text.
- Transparent window characteristic of polymer, with a jaguareté figure integrated and a colored floral element.
- Institutional seals and a color-shifting element next to the portraits.
Reverse (same violet range):
- Label ECORREGIÓN CHACO HÚMEDO, which identifies the ecosystem depicted.
- A jaguareté (Panthera onca, the jaguar) as the protagonist species, the continent’s great cat and one of the natural symbols of Paraguay.
- Vegetation typical of the Chaco wetlands and pollinating insects in the background.
- Value 2MIL and MOKÕI SU GUARANÍ, the denomination written in Guaraní, alongside REPÚBLICA DEL PARAGUAY.
- Silhouette of the map of Paraguay with the location of the ecoregion marked.
The Humid Chaco is the eastern strip of the Gran Chaco, consisting of marshes, palm groves, and floodable forests, one of the territories with the greatest presence of the country's iconic fauna. The jaguareté, currently threatened, is its flagship species.
Security features
As it is a polymer banknote, the 2,000 guaraníes concentrates its defenses on elements that the plastic substrate allows and paper does not:
- Transparent window with an integrated fauna figure, impossible to reproduce with a photocopier or home printer.
- Color element visible inside the transparent zone.
- Raised printing on portraits, main texts, and tactile marks.
- Tactile marks and large, high-contrast numerals designed for visually impaired people.
- Microprinting on borders and backgrounds, featuring motifs of Paraguayan identity.
- Differentiated format: it is the shortest banknote in the family, about 7 mm shorter than the 5,000, within the staggered system adopted by the entire series.
Technical specifications

Numismatic and collectible value
- It is the gateway to the series. As the lowest value, it is usually the banknote with which most collectors start the family, and the one most in demand in uncirculated condition.
- Unprecedented obverse. A collective tribute to indigenous peoples, without a nominal portrait, is rare in Latin American numismatics and gives the banknote a unique identity within the series.
- The jaguareté sells. Iconic fauna—and the jaguar in particular—is one of the most followed thematic collection topics in the world. This banknote enters directly into that cross-cutting demand.
- Polymer piece with window. Transparent windows with an integrated figure are the element most valued by collectors of plastic banknotes.
- Closes a chapter. Its appearance sets an expiration date for the current 2,000 guaraníes, which will begin to appreciate in uncirculated condition even before it stops circulating.
Why is it important for collectors?
- First comprehensive redesign of the guaraní in over six decades.
- Lowest denomination and most circulating of the new family.
- Only banknote in the series dedicated to indigenous peoples.
- Polymer with transparent window and jaguareté figure.
- Staggered format for accessibility, a technical milestone for Paraguay.
