The New 2026 South Ossetia 200 Zarin Banknote: A Tribute to Linguist Vasily Abaev
The National Bank of the Republic of South Ossetia has issued the 200 Zarin banknote, featuring the effigy of the renowned Ossetian linguist Vasily Ivanovich Abaev, dated 2026. This is the second piece in the young Zarin banknote series, following the 2025 100 Zarin banknote dedicated to the national poet Kosta Khetagurov, and is one of the most unique and exclusive issues in all of Caucasian numismatics, coming from one of the territories with the most limited recognition in the world.
If you are looking for the 2026 South Ossetia 200 Zarin banknote in UNC (Uncirculated) condition, with the AA serial prefix, for your collection, at Iberoamericana Banknotes we offer verified authentic specimens, with certification and secure international shipping. Context: The Zarin, a National Currency with a Numismatic Vocation
The Zarin (Зæрин, "gold" in Ossetian) is, along with the Russian ruble, one of the two official currencies of the Republic of South Ossetia, a South Caucasian territory with limited international recognition. Although the Zarin has full legal tender status in the country, at a fixed exchange rate of 1 Zarin = 10 Russian rubles, its practical use in everyday life is very limited: in practice, the population uses the Russian ruble for their habitual transactions, while Zarin coins and banknotes are conceived primarily as numismatic collector issues, actively promoted at specialized international fairs such as the Beijing International Numismatic Exhibition.
The first Zarin coins were introduced in 2013, and in 2025 the National Bank took a further step by issuing its first banknote, of 100 Zarin, dedicated to Kosta Khetagurov, considered the father of the Ossetian literary language. The 2026 200 Zarin banknote continues this same line, honoring another key figure of Ossetian culture and language.
Vasily Abaev: The Great Linguist of Ossetia
Vasily Ivanovich Abaev (1900-2001) was an Ossetian linguist and Iranologist, internationally recognized as one of the leading authorities in the study of the Ossetian language and Iranian languages in general. His most prominent work, a monumental historical-etymological dictionary of the Ossetian language, is considered a fundamental reference in Iranian studies. Abaev had already been honored previously in Ossetian numismatics: in 2015, the National Bank issued a 25 Zarin silver coin dedicated to him on the occasion of the 115th anniversary of his birth. The 200 Zarin banknote resumes and expands this tribute, now placing him on the highest denomination of the banknote series.
Following the Ossetian patronymic onomastic tradition, the obverse of the banknote includes his full name in that traditional format, "Абайты Иуане фырт Васо" (Vaso, son of Iuane, of the Abaty family), the same style that was already used on the 100 Zarin banknote to present Kosta Khetagurov.

Technical Specifications
For the most demanding collectors: like the 2025 100 Zarin banknote—printed by Goznak, the historic Russian mint, with a design by Dmitry Fedorov and Olga Erofeevskaya—everything points to the fact that the 200 Zarin banknote continues to be manufactured under the same production standard, given the stylistic and security consistency between both pieces. However, as it is a recently released issue distributed primarily for numismatic purposes (more characteristic of specialized dealers than central bank press releases), we have not been able to independently confirm the exact printing house or the total mintage of this specific denomination. The confirmed serial prefix is AA. As soon as we have more verified data, we will update this article.
Numismatic and Collectible Value
Several factors make this piece one of the most unique for specialized collectors:
- Extremely rare issuer — South Ossetia is one of the territories with the most limited international recognition in the world, making any of its numismatic issues a piece of great relative scarcity in the international market.
- Second piece of a very young series — Following the 2025 100 Zarin banknote, this is only the second banknote denomination ever issued by the National Bank of the Republic of South Ossetia.
- Tribute to a figure of international academic prestige — Abaev is a globally recognized authority in Iranian studies, which gives the piece an appeal that transcends purely regional interest.
- High-quality artistic design — Elements such as the portrait with original manuscript, Caucasian fauna, and security finishes reflect a production level comparable to that of fully recognized central banks.
