Mauritania 1000 Ouguiya P19 2014 UNC

1000 ouguiya polymer banknote from the Central Bank of Mauritania, dated November 28, 2014, uncirculated (UNC), cataloged as Pick 19.

Obverse: composed of green, blue, and red with fish motifs and traditional geometric patterns, the denomination in Arabic calligraphy, and a large oval-shaped transparent window with a colored security element. Reverse: fish in a net on the left and, in the center, a conical-roofed hut next to an ancient tower, with camels resting in the foreground.

The ouguiya replaced the CFA franc in 1973, when Mauritania created its own currency, and is divided into five khoums, a peculiarity among the world's currencies. Polymer offers greater durability in an arid climate, and the design combines Atlantic fishing with desert life.
