Mauritania 1000 Ouguiya P7A 1989 UNC

1000 ouguiya banknote from the Central Bank of Mauritania, dated November 28, 1989, uncirculated (UNC), cataloged as Pick 7A.

Obverse: green and blue design with large scrolls and traditional-inspired geometric motifs, the denomination in Arabic calligraphy, and a central white window with a watermark. Reverse: a dromedary on the left and, on the right, a cargo ship docked next to a port and industrial facility, with a fish in the water; in the corners, crescents with stars.

The ouguiya replaced the CFA franc in 1973, when Mauritania created its own currency, and is divided into five khoums, a peculiarity among the world's currencies. The dromedary and the port summarize the country: nomadic tradition and maritime trade from the Atlantic coast.
