Oman 1 Rial P48a 2015 Error Date UNC commemorative

Commemorative 1 Omani rial banknote from the Central Bank of Oman, issued in 2015 to celebrate the 45th National Day (1970–2015), uncirculated (UNC), cataloged as Pick 48a. This is the variant with a date error: the Hijri year printed below the Sultan’s signature on the obverse is 1427 instead of the correct 1437, which appears on the reverse (“1437 H/2015 G”) and on the corrected version.

Obverse: portrait of Sultan Qaboos bin Said wearing the traditional turban (massar) and embroidered attire, alongside the Omani coat of arms with the janthir and crossed swords and the denomination in Arabic, on a background of geometric motifs in shades of purple. To the right is Al Alam Palace, the Sultan’s ceremonial residence in Muscat, and the inscription for the 45th National Day in Arabic.

Reverse: the name of the issuing bank on a floral background, two white desert butterflies in a central circle, the 45th National Day logo and Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, with the denomination “One Rial.”

Qaboos bin Said ruled Oman from 1970 until his death in 2020, and this banknote commemorates nearly half a century of his reign. A highly prized piece for its purple-toned design, the date-error variant is of particular interest to collectors of printing oddities.
