Collection: Banknotes of Africa

Africa is the continent where it is cheapest to get into notaphily and where you learn the most for every euro spent. A banknote from Somalia, Congo or Sierra Leone costs less than a coffee, and behind it there is a central bank, its own design and a story that is almost never told.

What makes African notaphily different

Three things. The iconography: where Europe features scientists and writers, Africa features wildlife, agriculture, hydroelectric dams and traditional chiefs. The shared issuers: the CFA franc is issued by the BCEAO and the BEAC for fourteen countries, and each carries a letter identifying its own, making collecting the complete series an entertaining puzzle. And the issuers that no longer exist: Zaire, German East Africa, Guinea-Bissau before the CFA.

What you will find here

From Egypt and Morocco in the north to South Africa and Botswana in the south, including West Africa with the CFA franc and Indian Ocean countries such as Mauritius and Seychelles. There are modern polymer issues, colonial series and pieces from countries that rarely appear in Spanish collections.

The cheap way to build a serious collection

Africa allows something that no other continent allows: to complete dozens of countries with little expense. An uncirculated specimen from each sub-Saharan African country can be acquired for less than the cost of a single European banknote from the 1950s. It is the natural way for those who want a large collection without a large budget.
